Home Readers was established in 1996 as a non-profit organization. The founder Kathy Eble (which is pronounced like "EBB-Lee", with the accent on the first syllable), realized the need for a shopping service. Kathy is a member of the blind community, and has had tremendous support from her husband, Bill, who also plays a vital role in the Home Readers operation. Cricket, Kathy’s guide/companion dog, is always at her side playing an important role and winning the hearts of those who meet her.
Home Readers offices were run out of the Eble home until September 2008, when their new Braille division was added. Kathy and Bill’s home was already out of space, so they moved the business to a location in downtown Edgerton, Kansas.
The Braille division is Home Readers Braille Express. With multiple Braillers, they are capable of producing 16,000 pages of interpoint Braille per day. Home Readers Braille Express hopes to increase these numbers even more in the future. Their goal for the Braille division is to keep cost reasonable, to produce quality products, and of course, to make materials available for the blind community.
Throughout the growth of the Home Readers organization, Kathy has insisted on maintaining a personal relationship with her customers by taking phone calls and answering questions so she can keep in touch with the blind community. Home Readers provides various {catalogs}, cookbooks, books, and magazines on special 4-track cassettes, MP3s, Daisy books, and digital audio downloads from our sister site www.blindaudiocatalogs.com. These cassettes are made for players that are supplied to visually impaired and blind people free of charge by the {Library of Congress}. These audio catalogs allow blind and visually impaired people to independently shop for items by listening to the detailed descriptions of products in the catalogs. All catalogs produced by Home Readers can be ordered free of charge, or downloaded free of charge from www.blindaudiocatalogs.com.
Home Readers also provides various cookbooks, books and magazines. All of their cookbooks, books and magazines are available on 4-track cassette only at this time.
Home Readers will provide interested persons a list of all of the catalogs, cookbooks, books and magazines they record, FREE OF CHARGE upon request on special 4-track cassettes, MP’3, Daisy books, or by digital audio download.
The term "Home Readers" was derived from the people who record the publications. As part of the Home Readers network, these readers are paid audio transcribers who provide detailed descriptions as they transcribe catalogs and cookbooks to digital audio formats from their homes. Looking to have a catalog, book, manual, text book, or other materials transcribed digitally? We are capable of producing 270 cassettes per hour, 200 Mp3’s/Daisy books per hour and unlimited downloads.
