Home Readers was established 5 years ago as a non-profit organization. It was founded by Kathy Eble (which is pronounced like "EBB-Lee", with the accent on the first syllable), who is blind, and her husband, Bill. Cocoa, her seeing-eye dog, also plays an important role. Kathy currently runs the business out of her home with help from various people, including volunteers and interns from the Kauffman Social Entrepreneurial Foundation. Plans are underway to move the business out of the Eble home to a more efficient locale in Lawrence, Kansas.
Throughout the growth of Home Readers as an organization, Kathy has insisted on maintaining a personal relationship with her customers by helping to take orders so she can keep in touch with the blind community. Home Readers provides various {catalogs}, cookbooks, books, and magazines on special 4-track cassettes. These cassettes are made for players that are supplied to visually impaired and blind people free of charge by the {Library of Congress}. These taped catalogs allow blind and visually impaired people to independently shop for items by listening to the detailed descriptions of every item in the catalogs. Many of these catalogs can be ordered free of charge. A cassette listing all of the catalogs we produce is provided FREE OF CHARGE!

The term "Home Readers" was derived from the people who record the publications. As part of the Home Readers network, these readers provide detailed descriptions as they transcribe the catalogs and cookbooks to tape in their homes.
